Parliament to Parliament – a 500 mile walk, for charity,
by a ‘young’ man of 72
On June 4 2008 Balwant (Bobby) Singh Grewal will set off
on an epic 500 mile walk from the Scottish Parliament in
Edinburgh towards his destination, the English Houses of
Parliament, which he will reach five weeks later on 9th July 2008.
Bobby is undertaking this walk to raise money for research into bowel cancer and other bowel diseases atSt Mark’s Hospital Harrow, a hospital unique in the UK.
Bobby is a remarkable man in many ways. Born in Punjab, India, he has lived in Britain since 1958 and is very proud to be British, not having forgotten the values of life he inherited from his birthplace. He has worked as a successful property developer and now passionately believes in giving something back to the society which has given him a very good life during his time in Britain.
Since 2000, when he read an inspirational book “On Foot through Africa” Bobby has undertaken numerous large-scale walks for various charitable causes through his involvement with the India Association (www.indiaassociation.co.uk), of which he is now Chairman.
A keen sportsman all his life, in 2001 he ran the London Marathon in just over 5 hours, and in 2004/5 he completed an extraordinary walk covering 2,500 miles across India from the North-West frontier to the deep South. This walk raised £100,000 for research into Cancer and AIDS and the India Association donated the proceeds on 24th August 2007 at the London Portman Hotel to the Northwick Park Institute of Medical Research and AIDS.
Now, in 2008, he’s aiming for £1,000,000 for St Mark’s Hospital, Harrow. This hospital is one of a handful of hospitals around the world specialising into treatment of and research into colorectal disease (www.stmarkshospital.org.uk) It treats patients from the UK and overseas, the London hub for the bowel cancer screening programme is located at this site. It holds the Polyposis Registry and has the largest Endoscopy Unit in the UK – recently the recipient of a prestigious international award. It is one of the leading institutions of its type in the world and for many patients offers a future when all hope had been lost.
